Media Roles in Nature Conservation

Media Roles in Nature Conservation

Three journalists came to Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center (P-WEC) on Sunday, 20th November 2011 to share the information about media roles in nature conservation. They were representatives of El- Shinta, a national radio station, a Trans 7, a national television station, and Tempo, a national publication. During the regular discussion, Green Hang Out; they shared their experiences in publishing and broadcasting journalistic works of nature conservation.

Audiences who were representatives of nature and environment activists, students, villagers, and many more; enjoyed the discussions. Not only did they come from Greater Malang, where the center is located, participants were also from Surabaya and Jember cities in East Java. A university student from Jember told during the event, "We hope that the media pay attention to the environment cases in Jember like the mining in the national park."

Chairman of ProFauna Indonesia, Rosek Nursahid, who attended the event added that the media not only could support the conservation efforts but also take part in destroying the nature if the journalists did not have enough knowledge of nature conservation. The journalist from Tempo publication responded Nursahid statement, "Most local journalists have to know about everything but they do not enough knowledge about it, especially about the nature conservation. Thus, it is important that they keep sharing and stay updated with nature conservation activists like ProFauna."
