P-WEC Takes the Local Children to the Woods to Learn about Nature Conservation

"Yay! Let’s go to the woods!", the local children of the villages nearby P-WEC (Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center), ProFauna’s education center, exclaimed when they were told that P-WEC team would take them to the Bedengan Woods on 26 April 2012. On the sunny Thursday, P-WEC educators took the children from two elementary schools, SDN Kucur 3 and SDN Petungsewu 2 of Dau District – Malang Regency, to learn about nature conservation while having fun in the woods.

The trekking started from Gumuk Subvillage, 200 meters away from the woods. 33 children were taken by P-WEC team to the woods as an activity of its voluntary teaching program in 2012. The program is one of P-WEC social education to introduce nature conservation to school children of the villages nearby the center.

In the woods, children learned the nature conservation through some fun games like "the langurs and the forest" to understand how it feels to be wildlife that lose their shelters. Children were also guided by P-WEC team in tree watching activity where they were assigned to find the living creatures in the tree and try to list the names of the animals. They were excited to search for the small animals in the trees.

After the games on the land, the children continued another game in the river. They loved this game because not only could they play around in the water but also learned about the living creatures in the waters and the rocks. In the one day learning in the woods, most children expressed their satisfaction because they can learn about nature conservation through some games and adventures in the nature.
